Refusing Sex Survey Costing Georgia Federal Funds

Georgia will lose $1.8 million in funding due to state officials’ nonparticipation in a federal survey asking middle and high school students about their sexual history.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution stated that the Georgia Department of Education and Gov. Nathan Deal have deemed questions concerning condom use and number of sexual partners inappropriate for students as young as 12. Georgia has refused to answer these CDC survey questions since the 1990s.

This year, survey participation is tied to obtaining federal STD prevention grants. Brian Robinson, the governor’s spokesperson, declared that Deal did not want money that was tied to policies that “run contrary to Georgia values.”
