Frozen Berry Mix Linked to Hepatitis A Recalled

On June 4, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that Townsend Farms of Fairview, Oregon, is recalling its Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berry mix after the product was linked to at least 34 hepatitis A illnesses in five states.

Townsend Farms had sold its berry mix under the Townsend Farms label to Costco and under the Harris Teeter label at those stores.

The following states reported illnesses: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. Also, Hawaii health officials are investigating three hepatitis A cases in people who ate the frozen berry product.

The recall occurred three days after the FDA and CDC first announced a suspected link between the berries and the illnesses. The FDA did not say why there was not an immediate recall. Costco has stores across the United States, while Harris Teeter stores are located in the District of Columbia and in eight East Coast states. The FDA is inspecting Townsend Farms’ processing facilities.
