Rep. Adam Schiff (CA-28) to Introduce Amendment to
Restore HOPWA Funding
Last week, the House
Transportation-Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee
voted to cut HOPWA by $32 million. This
Wednesday, June 26th at 10 AM , the THUD Appropriations bill will move to the
full House Appropriations Committee for mark-up.
At the mark-up, committee members
will have an opportunity to offer amendments to restore funding for programs
that were cut in the draft bill. Congressman Adam Schiff (CA-28) plans to
introduce an amendment to the bill to restore funding to the Housing
Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program. The amendment will require
bipartisan support.
Schiff HOPWA Amendment
Increase funding from $300 million
to $335 million (President's requested level), by offsetting $35 million from a
total of $102.5 million from the Dept. of Transportation Office of the
Secretary Salaries and Expenses.
We need your help! This bill will be going to full
Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, June 26 at 10 AM. We need you to contact your state elected
officials (Mayors, States Representatives, City Council Members, etc.) and urge
them to contact Representative Ken Calvert (CA-42) and Representative David
Valadao (CA-21) and let them both know they support restoring vital funding to
HOPWA. If the proposed cut goes through,
over 5,000 households will lose access to important housing and support
services, and we can't let this happen.
