The Juma’s World Walk a Mile for
Orphans, organized by Black Creek resident and filmmaker Daniel Kooman, will
take place on June 16 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Courtenay Airpark, British
Columbia, Canada. Kooman began fundraising for orphans in Tanzania, Africa,
after he and David Youngren, the founder of Juma’s World, went there to make a
film. They met two young boys begging on the streets to support their
grandmother and six siblings after losing their parents to AIDS. The
organization sponsored the family and now the boys are enrolled in school, the
family’s needs are being met, and they are thriving. Kooman and Youngren have
continued to invest in the lives of Tanzania’s orphans through Juma’s World,
which is named for one of the boys.
Local artists will provide live
entertainment at the Walk a Mile event and participants will be eligible for
prizes and rewards. Also, the Prime Restaurant will donate $5 of every $20
spent on the Father’s Day dinner special to Juma’s World. Walk participants
will donate all collected funds to the new Juma’s World Education and
Distribution Centre, scheduled to begin construction in fall 2013. The center
will be used for education and creative programs as well as providing for the
daily needs of 1,000 orphans in Tanzania. Kooman sees the walk as making a
statement “that we are willing to walk hand-in-hand with children in Tanzania
and we believe that this powerful message of love will help change their
world.”
