Michigan’s Sacred Heart
Rehabilitation Center’s AIDS Care Program will celebrate its 25th anniversary
by hosting four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis. The special event,
called “An Evening with Greg Louganis,” will be free and open to the public. It
will take place at 7:00 p.m. on September 20 in the Malcolm Field Theatre on
the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. Following Louganis’s
presentation, the event’s organizers will provide refreshments. The next
morning, Saturday, September 21, Louganis will speak at the 9th Annual AIDS
Walk Great Lakes Bay Region at Wenonah Park in downtown Bay City. AIDS Walk is Sacred
Heart’s annual fundraiser for its AIDS Care Program. Diagnosed with HIV in
1988, Louganis continues to live an active, healthy life 25 years later.
The following organizations will
sponsor Louganis’s appearance: Saginaw Valley State University, Saginaw County
Health Department Treatment and Prevention Services, Riverhaven Coordinating
Agency, Delta College, and Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center. Grady Wilkinson,
president and chief executive officer of Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center,
declared, “We are honored and pleased to host Greg Louganis, who is an
inspiration to so many people, not only for his outstanding athletic
achievements, but for his courage in overcoming many personal life crises.”
Grady added, “As a provider of HIV/AIDS care services and addictions disorder
treatment, we at Sacred Heart can think of no other person on the national and
international stage who embodies a winning spirit of overcoming some of life’s
most difficult obstacles and going on to live a successful, purposeful life.”
Louganis, widely considered the
greatest diver in history, swept the 3-meter and 10-meter diving events in the
1984 and 1988 consecutive Olympic Games, becoming the only male to do so. He
earned a total of five Olympic medals, five World Championship titles, and 47
national titles—more than anyone in US history. Currently, Louganis mentors the
US Olympic diving team, gives motivational speeches, provides dog agility
expertise, and judges the Red Bull Cliff Diving Tour. He stars in the US
“Splash” and Australia’s “Celebrity Splash” television shows. The documentary
“Back on Board” featured Louganis as the subject of the film.
