HUD Gives $33 Million to HIV/AIDS Housing

On Thursday, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $33 million in grants through the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program.

“These grants offer housing, vital health care, and hope to hundreds of households that combine to literally save lives. Having stable housing can make all the difference to the health of someone living with HIV/AIDS who might otherwise be struggling to live on our streets,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.

Under HOPWA, 90 percent of funds are distributed to cities and states based on AIDS cases reported to CDC. Earlier this year, HUD awarded these 135 local and state jurisdictions almost $300 million in formula grants.

Many of the grantees offer specialized models of outreach and service delivery. The grants reach 60,000 households annually through the provision of permanent supportive housing and related services such as case management and employment training.
