HHS Gives IRS $500M to Implement Health Care Reform

The Obama administration is in the process of diverting about $500 million to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to enable the agency to implement key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. health care reform, including the individual mandate, The Hill reports.

The law provides the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with $1 billion to fund its implementation. HHS is expected to divert about half of this fund to the IRS to implement the individual mandate and other taxes and fees that are already in effect.

Republican critics have tried to halt this IRS funding until June, when the Supreme Court is expected to overturn or uphold all or various parts of the law.
