The week of April 22
is designated Connecticut STD Testing Week, and state Department of Public
Health officials are urging sexually active residents to get screened. One in
four US adults will have an STD at some point in their lifetime, said DPH
Commissioner Dr. Jewel Mullen.
“People who are
infected may unknowingly spread the disease and infect their partner,” Mullen
said in a news release.
Last year,
Connecticut logged 16,135 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis - the
three top STDs reported. Young women, African Americans, men who have sex with
men, and the poor are at highest risk for STDs. Residents ages 15-24 account
for nearly half of the state’s infections.
The state staffs
several clinics where STD tests are offered at no cost; parental consent is not
required for patients 13 and older. For more information, including a list of
clinics, telephone 860-509-7920.
