An Emotional Pelosi, with Tears, Marks 25th Anniversary of San Francisco-Created AIDS Memorial Quilt

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was among those taking part in a Wednesday night ceremony in the Castro district marking the 25th anniversary of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.

Begun by San Francisco volunteers in 1987, the quilt now memorializes more than 50,000 Americans lost to HIV/AIDS. Others in attendance included Names Project co-founders Cleve Jones and Michael Smith, who is now executive director of the AIDS Emergency Fund.

Pelosi wiped away tears as she viewed the panel honoring a friend, the political activist C. Scott Douglas. “We will keep fighting until there is a cure,” Pelosi said.
