Alaska Releases Statistics on HIV Cases

Alaska has released a new report highlighting the number of HIV cases that have been reported across the state since the 1980s, ktva.com reports.

According to the state’s Department of Epidemiology, there have been nearly 1,500 HIV cases between 1982 and December 31, 2011. In 2011, the state reported 61 new HIV cases, 24 of which were diagnosed in Alaska, and eight that were part of an ongoing outbreak in the Fairbanks area, which health officials say primarily involves men who have sex with men.
