Colorado is the first state in the nation to issue business licenses for medical marijuana dispensaries and the makers of marijuana-infused products, the Denver Post reports.
Eleven businesses have received licenses, and seven more are likely to receive them soon. The state has asked local governments to double-check that 467 more businesses have local approval.
Medical marijuana advocates credit the thoroughness of Colorado's regulations on cannabis sales for protecting these businesses from federal intervention.
