AMA Supports Research on Organ Transplants Between People With HIV

The American Medical Association (AMA) supports amending federal law that blocks clinical research of HIV-infected organ donation, according to an AMA statement.

The Federal National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 currently prohibits donations of organs from people with HIV and therefore bars investigational studies.

Advances in HIV treatment and improvements in transplant outcomes could make organ transplantation between people with HIV a viable clinical option, but research is needed to understand the clinical risks and benefits.
