Inmates Sue Ohio for Revealing They Have HIV

At least seven HIV-positive inmates are suing the state of Ohio after their medical records were released to the general prison population, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

Prison officials at the Mansfield Correctional Institution left records of up to 10 HIV-positive inmates in a place where they could easily be taken. The documents were then circulated, revealing the individuals’ HIV status to the 2,600-inmate prison population.

The lawsuits ask for at least $25,000 per inmate in damages from being harassed, ridiculed and threatened, which caused them to feel anxious and to fear for their safety.
