DJ Kendra G Asks Philadelphia Teen Girls to Commit to Abstinence

As an on-air personality on WPHI-FM Hot 107.9, DJ Kendra Gilliam lives a glamorous, sexy and hip life. But she also is working to promote a particular lifestyle choice - abstinence.

Gilliam is the author of the new book “Abstinence is Kool: Challenging Girls Everywhere!!! Can You Say No to Sex for the School Year?” In it, she shares with readers her past mistakes, such as getting pregnant at 19 and having unprotected sex with a non-monogamous partner. “I’m candid. I’m upfront and I’m giving you my life,” she said. “I just want the girls to know the truth, that sex doesn’t equal love.”

Gilliam tells the story of talking with a group of about 30 Philadelphia seventh- and eighth-grade girls. She asked how many wanted to be married and four raised their hands. Then she asked how many wanted to be mothers and nearly all hands went up.

“Guys don’t treat every girl like their wife. But we give every guy the husband treatment,” Gilliam noted. “Women, we need to pull back a little bit and treat every guy like a friend. Let him get promoted to boyfriend,” she said. “Get to know him. Have a standard that I’m not having sex unless I’m in a relationship.”

Gilliam gave the example of entertainer BeyoncĂ© to illustrate her point. “BeyoncĂ© is the quintessential ‘Abstinence is Kool’ girl because she focused on herself. She made her dreams a reality,” she said of the entertainer, who recently announced she is expecting a baby with her husband, the hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.
