At its regular meeting on May 22,
the Tupelo Public School Board voted to continue using abstinence-only sex
education materials, as the district has done since at least 2000.
The board enacted some small changes
in the current policy to bring its language in line with HB 999. That measure,
which became law in 2011, requires all school districts in the state to adopt
an abstinence-only or abstinence-plus approach by June 30.
David Meadows, the interim
superintendent, told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that Tupelo stayed
with abstinence-only because it allows more flexibility.
