Founded in 1985, Palm Beach County’s
Comprehensive AIDS Program (www.cappbc.org) is its oldest and largest AIDS
resource. CAP’s staff works out of three offices and serves a diverse population.
The “Community Promise” program targets Latinos, while the “Real AIDS
Prevention Program” focuses on blacks.
CAP distributes prevention materials
and offers onsite testing, medical transportation, health insurance referrals,
dental work, and a working pharmacy through its “Found Care” program. CAP’s
“Street Smart” program provides tenant-based housing and emergency housing for
up to one year for clients who would be homeless otherwise. CAP has already
served 1,800 people with AIDS this year.
Broward County’s Broward House
(www.browardhouse.org) boasts 13 locations and is South Florida’s largest
HIV/AIDS resource. It began in 1989 with upwards of 50 beds for people with
HIV/AIDS, and it has become a one-stop shop offering everything from housing to
medical care.
Broward House’s services include
assisted-living facilities, substance abuse treatment, access to physicians and
nurses, mental health therapy, transportation, case management, insurance
assistance, counseling, and suicide prevention. In addition to HIV testing
services for 4,000 people, Broward House assists approximately 6,500 clients
annually and currently is investigating providing home-based care.
Created by a 1998 merger, Miami-Dade
County’s Care Resource (www.careresource.org) now occupies two locations and
serves 9,000 clients. It provides health care, financial aid, transportation,
and abuse counseling, with prevention programs targeting at-risk populations:
youths, men who have sex with men, the incarcerated, blacks, Haitians, and
Hispanics. Using four RV’s, Care Resource tests nearly 12,000 people annually
for HIV, STDs, and diabetes. Through the “Kill AIDS” campaign, it targets the
younger generation with a blunt prevention message.
