The Gaston County Health Department
will mark National HIV Testing Day by offering free HIV and syphilis tests on
June 27. The Gaston HIV Outreach Program will hold the drop-in clinic from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. at the department’s main branch, 991 W. Hudson Blvd. No
appointment is necessary; testers will be given a phone number to call to
receive their results in two weeks.
“The thing we want people to
remember is that only good can come from knowing your HIV status,” said Chris
Dobbins, the county’s health director. “If you’re positive, you can obtain
disease treatments to maintain your good health, and you can avoid infecting
others.”
As of January 2011, the most recent period for
which statistics are available, 476 Gaston County residents were living with
HIV/AIDS.
