Help us protect safe and affordable housing
for the lowest-income people living with HIV/AIDS.
The evidence is clear: People who are living with HIV/AIDS
but lack stable housing are significantly less likely to stay healthy. That’s
why The Friends of AIDS Foundation urges you to contact Members of Congress
THIS WEEK and ask that they work with the leaders of the Housing Appropriations
Subcommittee to ask for a FY2013 funding level of at least $332 million for the
Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program.
This week, the House Appropriations Subcommittee is
scheduled to release and vote on next year's funding bill. Currently, HOWPA
receives $332 million funding nationally, and we're asking the House to
maintain at least that level of funding next year. Of course, this funding does
not represent the actual need; there are hundreds of households across the country
with people living with HIV who are in extreme need of housing services.
However, this funding level would be an improvement over the Senate's
recommendation of $330 million and will prevent a cut that would be harmful to
the HIV/AIDS community.
HOPWA is a nationwide program that provides housing support
for people with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. This includes direct housing assistance
such as move-in grants, housing case management, and other support services
that keep people in their homes and off the streets, stable and healthy.
