The Los Angeles County Department of
Public Health announced on Thursday the winner of its contest to choose a
package design for the free condoms it distributes.
The winner, “Suit Up,” features a
black bow-tie; it was submitted by Adam Lyons, who runs a one-person creative
studio, Pop the Pixel, in West Hollywood. Lyons said “suit up” was not a
reference to the CBS show “How I Met Your Mother,” even though the character
portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris uses the phrase often. “I would say that Los
Angeles is classy and sophisticated and refined, hence the bow-tie,” Lyons
said.
More than 185,000 online votes were
cast to choose the winner from the top 50 designs selected by a panel of
judges. Program manager True Beck said the health department, in conjunction
with CDC, is paying to produce a million condoms packaged with Lyons’ design.
The package must receive routine approval from the Food and Drug
Administration, Beck said, with distribution set to begin in six to eight
months.
