The Natchez-Adams County School
District Board of Trustees has voted to adopt an abstinence-only approach to
sex education classes for sixth-graders beginning in the fall.
According to a report in the Natchez
Democrat, while the board chose the abstinence-only program, it also voted to
incorporate some portions of the abstinence-plus curriculum. When the course is
completed, the board will get a report on how the information was received and
the number of students who took part.
Parents will choose whether their
children attend the classes, in which students will be separated by gender.
State law gives Mississippi schools until June 30 to decide how to incorporate
sex education classes into the curriculum starting with the 2012-13 academic
year.
