Atlanta’s Morehouse School of
Medicine announced Thursday it has raised $2 million to create what is being
called the first endowed chair on sexuality and religion at a US medical
school.
A one-year search will be conducted
to identify the chairperson, who will develop ways to instruct physicians and
theologians on issues include contraception, STDs, and preventing rape and
unintended pregnancy. The individual will report to Dr. David Satcher, a former
US surgeon general who is now a Morehouse administrator. The chair is named for
two Florida-based benefactors: the Rev. Marta Weeks, an Episcopal priest, and
the Rev. David Richards, a retired Episcopal bishop.
In addition to teaching at
Morehouse, the chairperson is expected to work with other medical and religious
academic institutions to help shape their curricula.
