PEPFAR Recalls and Quarantines HIV Rapid Test Kits

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has recalled certain HIV rapid test kits procured with PEPFAR funds, according to a PEPFAR statement. PEPFAR is advising that participating countries quarantine all Standard Diagnostic (SD) Bioline 1/2 3.0 HIV rapid test kits, regardless of lot number.

The decision to recall the test kits occurred after quality assurance evaluations identified defective kits in which “invalid” test results appeared because of a defective component of the testing apparatus. PEPFAR is working with participating countries to supply replacement kits and eliminate or minimize interruptions in HIV testing that may result from the recall.
