Kenya Recalls a Million South Korean HIV Testing Kits

Kenya has recalled 1 million HIV testing kits made in South Korea because of fears about their accuracy, BBC News reports.

The World Health Organization raised an alert about the kits after finding half the test results could be wrong. The manufacturer says it volunteered to withdraw the kits and that the problem is that they give “invalid” results, rather than inaccurate ones.

HIV testing has increased sharply in the past decade in the East African country, following a government-backed campaign to create more awareness about the virus. In 2000, Kenya had only three voluntary testing and counseling sites, but the number had risen to nearly 1,000 by 2007. More than 1 million Kenyans are HIV positive.
