Local activists, consumers, and
advocates in Oakland, Calif., met to discuss housing for persons living with
HIV/AIDS a few days before Affordable Housing Week, which ends May 19.
Darice Bridges, AIDS housing
information and referral coordinator for Alameda County 211, discussed local
resources available and supplied a list of Alameda County developers/projects
with units set aside for persons with AIDS. Many in the audience commented on
the fact that housing needs were shifting.
When the Housing Opportunities for
Persons with AIDS program began, HIV was considered a “death sentence,” housing
was mostly hospice housing, and most of the funding was still based on AIDS
cases and not for people living with HIV. All present agreed that housing was
an important tool for ending the spread of HIV and that advocacy was an
essential part of the process.
