New Yorkers Ask Cops to Stop Confiscating Condoms

Advocates contend that police are jailing many New Yorkers under the assumption of prostitution after finding and confiscating condoms. Transgender people in particular report that cops assume they are sex workers.

Advocates believe that, regardless of an individual’s reason for being in possession of condoms while out on the streets, everyone should practice safe sex, particularly prostitutes.

To this end, people pressed the state government in Albany this week to approve legislation barring the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution. Supporters of the No Condoms as Evidence Bill say confiscating condoms is a public health threat and a waste of the approximately 40 million condoms the state distributes each year.
