National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) will focus the public’s attention on the effects of HIV/AIDS stigma on May 19, National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The department estimates that one-third of Asians and Pacific Islanders are HIV-infected and unaware they have the virus. DPHSS is partnering with Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA), GUAHAN Project/WestCare Pacific Islands (WCPI), Bank of Guam, and 76/Circle K to sponsor a number of events to encourage HIV testing.

GALA will hold an open house and screen the Banyan Tree Project’s “Taking Root” stories on Wednesday, May 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Dos Amantes Plaza, located on N. Marine Corp Drive, Upper Tumon. The event will feature refreshments and giveaways. Individuals may call (671) 969–5483 for additional information.

The GUAHAN Project/WCPI will have an open house and screen the Banyan Tree Project’s “Taking Root” stories from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. The event will take place at Suite 301, Core Pacific Building, Tamuning. The event will feature refreshments and giveaways. Individuals may call (671) 472–0218 for additional information.

On Friday, May 17, participating organizations will observe “Wave for Awareness” at the ITC Intersection in Tamuning.
