The number of people with HIV
receiving subsidized antiretroviral therapy in Zimbabwe has increased by 60,000
since last year, from 450,000 patients to 510,000, according to the National
AIDS Council.
NAC set a target of adding 100,000
people to the treatment program by the end of the year. “We are definitely
going to surpass our target,” said Tapiwa Magure, NAC’s chief executive.
Zimbabwe still has 115,577 people on
a waiting list for treatment, and the uptake of ARVs among children remains
low. However, it has adopted the World Health Organization’s most-recent
treatment initiation guidelines.
