Local and state officials have OK’d
plans for a needle-exchange program in Holyoke. It will be run by Tapestry
Health, which operates western Massachusetts’ only other NEP, in Northampton.
Based in Tapestry’s office at 15A
Main St., the new NEP was unanimously approved by the Holyoke Board of Health,
supported by Mayor Alex Morse, and authorized by the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health. Needle-sharing is blamed for 32 percent of new HIV cases in
Holyoke, compared to the statewide average of 12 percent.
The new program brings to five the
number of Massachusetts communities with NEPs.
