A recent half-day seminar targeting
Lexington adolescent girls and their mothers covered STDs, health and
nutrition, Internet safety, self-esteem, and coping with the middle school and
high school years. Created by the nonprofit Sisters Road to Freedom (SRF), “The
Molding of Generation Divas” conference on June 23 divided the young women into
two groups, for girls ages 10-13 and 14-18, while their mothers attended a
separate class until a final overall session.
It is important that teens receive
reliable information, said Theresa Warrick, SRF’s founder. The conference
featured experts in adolescent psychiatry and medicine, as well as
representatives from the Lexington Police and Lexington Fayette County Health
departments.
“Sometimes it’s better they listen
to someone else. You know, it’s like you are no longer cool,” said Mercedes
Harn, who attended the event with her daughter, Camille, a sixth-grader.
Camille said she learned about the importance of condom use and avoiding STDs.
Any good guidance is welcome, said Mercedes, adding, “Peer pressure is
everywhere.” “I want to come back. It’s fun to be in a class with an actual
expert,” said Alyssa Henderson, a junior in high school.
