South Africa’s plan to prevent
mother-to-child HIV transmission spared about 117,000 babies from contracting
the virus last year, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said Thursday.
According to the Medical Research
Council, the proportion of HIV-positive mothers who passed the virus to their
babies fell from 8 percent in 2008, to 3.5 percent in 2010, to 2.7 percent in
2011. “These results, if sustained, will make a major contribution to our
efforts to decrease” the deaths of infants and young children, he said.
