South Africa Reports New Success in Saving Newborns from HIV

South Africa’s plan to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission spared about 117,000 babies from contracting the virus last year, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said Thursday.

According to the Medical Research Council, the proportion of HIV-positive mothers who passed the virus to their babies fell from 8 percent in 2008, to 3.5 percent in 2010, to 2.7 percent in 2011. “These results, if sustained, will make a major contribution to our efforts to decrease” the deaths of infants and young children, he said.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. To learn more about The Friends of AIDS Foundation, please visit: http://www.friendsofaids.org.
