The 11th assembly of the
Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS was held Monday on the
sidelines of the 19th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Penehupifo Pohamba, the first lady
of Namibia and OAFLA’s president, stressed the need to do more to prevent
mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT). She said OAFLA will grant about
$50,000 to each of the five African regions to help implement the continental
PMTCT campaign, noting that the countries to be assisted by the funds would be
identified by vice presidents in the regions.
Pohamba also thanked UNAIDS for
providing an additional $50,000 for PMTCT work. She called on member nations to
jointly launch the campaign, and she asked the first ladies to give their full
support to a review of OAFLA’s agenda for fighting HIV/AIDS.
