Georgia Creates Waiting List for HIV/AIDS Drugs for the Poor

On July 1, Georgia began a waiting list for patients who need help from the state AIDS Drug Assistance Program.

State ADAP enrollment spiked 17 percent during fiscal year 2009, while program funding has continued to be limited, said Georgia public health officials. Current ADAP clients will not be affected unless they fail to renew their enrollment every six months or do not pick up their prescriptions within 60 days. Clients who miss those periodic deadlines will be dropped from the program and added to the waiting list. State officials anticipate about 130 applicants will be placed on deferment in July.

Local health departments will assist HIV/AIDS patients needing treatment in applying to drug company treatment programs, said Susan Alt, director of HIV services for the Coastal Health District.
