11.5 Percent HIV/AIDS Prevalence in Mozambique: Report

Mozambique's HIV prevalence is 11.5 percent, according to the southern African nation's first comprehensive surveillance report, which was released Monday by the health ministry and the national statistics department.

Based on data from 16,600 people from the country's 10 provinces, the report finds that 13.1 percent of women were infected, compared to 9.2 percent of men. "The situation in Mozambique is extremely serious," said Health Minister Paulo Ivo Garrido. The government, he said, "considers AIDS the first threat to the country. We will continue to battle it to reduce prevalence." UNAIDS estimates that 5.2 percent of adults in southern Africa are HIV-positive.
