HIV Test Clears Porn Actor

An adult-film performer whose positive HIV test caused a weeklong shutdown of porn productions in the Los Angeles area has been retested with negative results, according to the Free Speech Coalition.

“After discussion with our medical expert, he has advised that it would be appropriate for production to resume, and the focus of attention [be] brought to those who had worked with the performer. That group is already receiving care,” said Diane Duke, executive director of the industry trade group. No identifying information has been released about the individual, whom Duke said tested positive at a Florida facility. FSC’s Adult Performer Health and Safety Services administered the second test; it also recently introduced a database to let porn agents and producers access actors’ STD/HIV test results.

Industry standards call for performers to be screened every 30 days and show proof of testing negative before working. AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein expressed relief that the performer is not infected, but he reiterated that he disagrees with a health screening process that does not include public health officials. AHF wants health and safety authorities to mandate condom use in adult films.
