European Union Gives Funds to South African Fight Against AIDS, TB

The European Commission on Monday announced a €126 million (US $172 million) contribution to improve South Africa’s primary health care system and support its fight against HIV/AIDS and TB.

“The launch of one of the largest EU health programs in the world shows that we want to make a real difference in people’s lives: reduce maternal and child mortality, fight diseases like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and increase life expectancy,” said EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.

Top EU officials will introduce the program during a visit to South Africa later this week.
