HIV Cases Spike Among South Australia Heterosexuals

Health authorities in South Australia issued a warning after documenting a jump in cases of HIV among heterosexual men.

More than half the 43 cases diagnosed in the state in 2010 involved heterosexual men - a significant rise from 2001, said Dr. Russell Waddell, director of STD services at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Nine such cases have been seen so far this year, he added.

“A review of these cases has identified some common activities and themes which explain the likely cause for the increase,” Waddell said in a statement. “This includes people having unprotected sex with multiple partners, association with sex parties or group sex, bisexuality within sexual networks, and recreational drug use.”

Persons involved in such activities, as well as anyone with concerns about HIV, should contact their physician or an STD clinic, he said.
