Drug Chain Sex-Disease Cure Sale

Superdrug, the large UK drugstore chain, has launched a new online service for people seeking oral contraceptives and testing and treatment for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

For £40, (US $62.55), Superdrug will mail a urine-based test for both chlamydia and gonorrhea to customers, with a pre-paid package for patients to send the sample off for lab testing. Patients access their results online.

Superdrug also offers, after an online consultation with a General Medical Council-registered doctor, a prescription service for oral contraceptive pills (£27 [US $42]) and treatment for chlamydia (£25 [US $39]), gonorrhea (£30 [US $47]), and urinary tract infection (£17 [US $27]). The drugs still must be picked up at the store, but the price covers both the consultation and medication.

“There are some health problems which can genuinely cause embarrassment, and this fear factor can stop people from getting the correct treatment,” said Rob Haines, the chain’s head of pharmacy. “Our new service offers customers a convenient and speedy alternative to visiting their [general practitioner], and also helps those who aren’t registered with a doctor.”

The service, http://www.onlinedoctor.superdrug.com, is only available to those over age 16.
