On February 21, Rep. Frank Pallone
Jr. (D-N.J.) announced that the Ryan White program for low-income individuals
and families living with HIV/AIDS would provide $1,007,693 in federal funding
for medical care and support to Middlesex County, N.J. Pallone declared, “New
Jersey has unfortunately ranked highly in the nation for number of reported
HIV/AIDS cases, but this funding for the Ryan White Program of Middlesex will
provide critical medical care and support services for those living with
HIV/AIDS who would otherwise have no means of paying for it.”
Pallone serves as the ranking member
of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, which has jurisdiction
over the Ryan White program. Pallone intends to work with his colleagues on the
health subcommittee to make sure that the program continues, as it enriches the
quality of life for some of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
The Ryan White program is the
largest federal program designed specifically for HIV-infected persons in the
United States. The program provides HIV-related services to more than 500,000
people each year by working with cities, states, and local community-based
organizations. The Ryan White program began in 1990, and functions as the
“payer of last resort” for those who face coverage limits or who have no other
source of coverage. The program is up for reauthorization in September 2013.
