Plans are afoot for an HIV/AIDS
Information Center and national AIDS monument in West Hollywood (WeHo). On
Wednesday, April 24, there will be a fundraiser and panel discussion at the
West Hollywood Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard at Melrose, to
benefit both the construction of the information center and the Foundation for
a National AIDS Monument. The program begins with the 6:15 p.m. showing of the
award-winning documentary, “ How to Survive a Plague,” which describes the
early activism of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment
Action Group) as they put pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to make an
effective AIDS drug.
The panel discussion follows at 8:00
p.m. with Dr. Michael Gottlieb, HIV expert Dr. David Hardy, ACT UP founder Jim
Eigo, and Councilmember John Duran. Gottlieb diagnosed the first case of
HIV/AIDS in 1981 and has been working with HIV/AIDS-infected individuals
worldwide.
The information center to be called
the Dr. Michael Gottlieb HIV/AIDS Information Center will be an extension of
the West Hollywood Library and will provide programs and materials on HIV/AIDS.
The national monument will pay tribute to the people and organizations that
worked to reduce the disease from a plague to a manageable chronic disease.
Tickets are $50–$1,000. For more
