The Bridgeport, Conn. Department of
Housing and Community Development is currently accepting applications for the
Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), Housing Emergency Solutions
grants (HESG), and Housing Opportunity for People with HIV/AIDS (HOPWA) grants.
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch stated, “All three of these grant programs provide
much-needed dollars to those who need assistance the most.”
CDBG is the annual federal grant
program that specifically addresses the needs of low- and moderate-income
beneficiaries. Housing activities comprise projects that make available
affordable and suitable housing for low- to moderate-income persons, as well as
public facilities, infrastructure activities, and economic development
activities. HOPWA grants provide housing assistance and associated support
services. HOPWA urges grant recipients to form partnerships with area nonprofit
organizations and develop community-wide strategies. HOPWA funding offers an
array of services, including housing, program planning, social services, and
development costs. These services encompass but are not limited to the
acquisition, rehabilitation, or new construction of housing units, rental
assistance, costs for facility operations, and short-term payments to prevent
homelessness. HOPWA funds also may be used for chemical dependency treatment,
mental health services and health care, case management, assistance with daily
living, nutritional services, and other supportive services.
Grant seekers may obtain
applications at the Housing and Community Development Office, Margaret E.
Morton Government Center, Second Floor, or online at www.bridgeportct.gov. The
due date for submitting grant applications to the city is February 7. The
Citizens’ Union and City Council will review the applications when the
organizations present them at public hearings to be held in February and March.
The Housing and Community Development staff will review and evaluate the
applications before forwarding them to the Bridgeport Citizens’ Union, and then
to the City Council for a final allocation vote in April of 2013.
