Several Kansas metropolitan area
organizations will host events in March to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in
recognition of these upcoming observances: National Week of Prayer for the
Healing of AIDS, March 3–9; National Women and Girls’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day,
March 10; and National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, March 20.
For the National Week of Prayer for
the Healing of AIDS, in the Kansas City metropolitan area, the Calvary
Community Outreach Network, partnering with multiple community providers, is
coordinating an array of events during the week of March 3–9. Presentations
include a TIPS (Taking It to the Pews) revival; special nights for HIV-positive
men and women; a parade of healing, a health resource fair, youth games, and
clergy basketball game; and a production of the play “The Lot” on March 5,
featuring a guest appearance by “The Voice” finalist Jamar Rogers. For more

Collaborative, comprised of local churches and organizations, is hosting events
throughout the week of March 3–9, with specific nights focused on youth, senior
citizens, men and women, and a gospel concert. For more information, contact

In honor of Women and Girls’
HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the US Department of Health and Human Services, working
with multiple community providers, is holding an awareness event in the Kansas
City metropolitan area that will feature keynote speaker Jannis Evans from the
State of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The event will take
place at the Robert J. Mohart Community Center, 3200 Wayne Street, Kansas City,
Missouri, on March 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Community partners will
provide free confidential HIV testing, health screenings, and health

working with Positive Connections, the YWCA, Washburn’s To Write Love on Her
Arms, the Washburn University Health Department, and the Shawnee County Health
Agency to hold an event titled “Your Moment,” a women’s health fair, on March 6
from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Washburn University Student Union. The
partnering agencies will offer free confidential HIV testing, health
information, and depression screenings. Community members and students are
welcome and are encouraged to wear red shoes to raise awareness and visibility

The Topeka area will acknowledge
Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day through a dinner program hosted by the Kansas
AIDS Education and Training Center (KAETC), working with the University of
Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita, the Douglas County AIDS Project, and
Positive Connections. The dinner program will take place at the Prairie Band
Potawatomi Casino and Resort Conference Center on March 20 from 5:30 to 8:30
p.m. The program is open to all Tribal leaders and healthcare providers
interested in how HIV impacts native communities. Continuing Education credit
