84% of Gauteng Youth HIV-Free

On March 13 the AIDS Council of the Gauteng Province in South Africa said that 84 percent of youths living in the province are HIV-free and that condom use has increased to 80 percent among male teenagers during their most recent sexual encounter.

The council announced the major advances in the fight against HIV/AIDS after meeting with Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane in Johannesburg on March 13. Premier Mokonyane credited several campaigns in schools and townships with the advances in HIV-free statistics, but cautioned that while more male teenagers were engaging in responsible sexual behavior, the same was not true for young girls, and that the council would now shift its focus to educating older men who attract younger girls and may infect them with HIV.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. To learn more about The Friends of AIDS Foundation, please visit: http://www.friendsofaids.org.
