The head of the Obama
administration’s global AIDS organization, the President’s Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Ambassador Eric Goosby, has been named to lead a new
Office of Global Health Diplomacy.
According to the State Department,
the announcement was made on December 14. The ambassador’s new role was
welcomed by some advocacy groups and U.N.AIDS. Policy chief for AmFAR, Chris
Collins, commented that high-level diplomacy was instrumental for getting
countries to invest more on their epidemics and for encouraging them to stop ignoring
politically unpopular victims like gay men, drug users, and prostitutes.
