The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF)
opened its eleventh Men’s Wellness Center in the Oakland “Out of the Closet”
thrift store on December 1, 2012, World AIDS Day. The newest center is located
at 238 E. 18th Street and is open to walk-ins from 3 to 7 p.m. each Monday and
Saturday.
AHF centers offer free screenings
for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydia,
gonorrhea, and syphilis. AHF encourages sexually active men to make sexual
health screenings part of their routine health care.
Dale Gluth, associate regional
director of the Bay Area AHF, stated that the location of the AHF centers is
designed to offer “services in a friendly, non-threatening venue that is also
accessible and affordable.” Gluth said sexual health screenings should become
as routine as annual dental check-ups or regular gym work-outs. Additional
information about the “Out of the Closet” thrift store location and other AHF
locations is available online at www.freeSTDcheck.org or by calling (510)
251-8678. AHF Wellness Centers are frequently located next to AHF Healthcare
Centers.
