The AIDS Alliance of Northwest
Georgia will join with St. Luke A.M.E. Church in honor of World AIDS Day on
December 1 to stress the importance of HIV testing and celebrate advances in
treatment. Free HIV testing will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. along with a 6
p.m. worship service at the church, which is located at 130 Jones Street in
Cartersville.
The Executive Director for the AIDS
Alliance, Lola Thomas, commented, “World AIDS Day is a day set aside to focus
on issues related to HIV and AIDS. It’s a combination of remembering lives that
have been lost … but it’s also a day to be looking forward in terms of the
future and envisioning a time when we no longer have HIV infection and AIDS.”
Thomas stressed the importance of testing in the prevention of HIV, pointing
out that it ties into the theme of this year’s World AIDS Day “Getting to
Zero,” meaning zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero
AIDS-related deaths.
In existence since 1992, the AIDS
Alliance assists HIV/AIDS clients in 10 northwest Georgia counties through
offering HIV/AIDS education and prevention and other services such as a housing
program and transportation for clients to their healthcare provider
appointments. At its office at 1 Friendship Plaza in Cartersville, the
nonprofit organization offers free oral HIV tests each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. For further information on the AIDS Alliance’s services or the World AIDS
Day observance on December 1, call (770) 606-0953.
