Indiana University-Bloomington on Monday announced the creation of a new scholarship honoring the Indiana teenager whose battle for acceptance made him a national symbol in the fight against HIV- and AIDS-related stigma. The Ryan White Legacy Scholarship will be awarded by IU's Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and its School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; its recipients will be students pursuing a master of public health degree, with preference to those studying AIDS/STD prevention or sexual health. Thursday marks the 20th anniversary of the death of White, just months before he intended to start classes at IU-Bloomington. The university is planning a special commemoration on Friday entitled "AIDS Education: 20Years After Ryan White"; guest speakers will include Jeanne White-Ginder, Ryan's mother. "Ryan was hoping so much to go to IU, and now he will be an everlasting part of the university," White-Ginder said.
