The National Science Foundation has
awarded a University of Alabama anthropology doctoral student a $16,000 grant
to research the influence of social factors on the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The student formulated her research
project while interviewing black women and their daughters for her master’s
thesis project and finding that many individuals had incorrect beliefs about
HIV/AIDS. Some women told her that they could identify individuals who had
HIV/AIDS by their appearance.
The student planned to study how
these misperceptions might impact young women’s risks of contracting the virus.
The Friends of AIDS Foundation is
dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and
empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV
virus.
