Hair Show, Disco Dance Party to Help Fight HIV, AIDS

Carla Ramos, a Poughkeepsie, N.Y., hairstylist and makeup artist whose cousin, her cousin’s husband, and several friends died from HIV/AIDS, created the Hairdressers’ Disco Ball and Fantasy Hair Show in 2010 to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

The third annual event will feature stylists from 20 local salons showcasing “wild, wacky, and wonderful” hairstyles on runway models, a disco-inspired dance party, silent auction, vendor tables, and door prizes. The $40 admission fee also will include appetizers and cocktails specials.

This year’s Broadway-themed show will be held from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. on August 18, at the Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls.

Proceeds will be donated to Hudson Valley Community Services, formerly called AIDS-Related Community Services. The organization provides case management and support, food and nutrition advice, support groups, prison services, HIV testing, HIV prevention services, and other resources for clients in Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster counties. Ramos hopes that her contribution will help raise HIV awareness because “people are still coming up HIV-positive.” Last year’s event hosted 550 attendees and raised $16,000.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus.
