Some 200 students from 21
universities gathered Sunday at Beijing’s University of International Business
and Economics to take part in a ceremony marking the 29th annual International
AIDS Candlelight Memorial.
“The campaign we launched this year
is different from previous ones, as it is the first time we held the memorial
on campus,” said Ye Dawei, vice secretary-general of the China Red Ribbon
Foundation, which held the gathering with UNAIDS and the China Alliance of
People Living with HIV/AIDS.
“I have learned more about the
living conditions of AIDS patients by participating in the memorial service,”
said Wang Yuanyuan, a student at UIBE. In his remarks, UNAIDS official Guy
Taylor said he hopes China will devote greater effort to protecting the privacy
and equality of those living with HIV/AIDS.
