Founded 25 years ago with the help
of a $1.6 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the HIV
Outpatient Program in New Orleans is marking its anniversary with an open house
Friday, 2-5 p.m. In New Orleans alone, the clinic has more than 600 patients
who have been followed for more than a decade, said David Little, program
manager.
In June 2011, the clinic moved to
2235 Poydras St.; this venue includes space for patient exams, dental and
optical treatments, meeting areas, and a nutrition center. The program, part of
the Interim LSU Public Hospital, has some 70 full- and part-time employees and
participates in clinical trials of drugs.
Also on Friday, the NO/AIDS Task
Force is opening The Movement, a community space at 4005 St. Claude Ave. that
offers HIV testing, counseling, and medical referrals with a special focus on
young black men. For more information, telephone 504-267-4288.
